Social & Environmental Responsibility

As a small but growing chain of restaurants, we are conscious of our social and environmental responsibilities. We are proud to play an active role in the communities in which our restaurants are located, and are constantly striving to become more environmentally-friendly and more socially-aware.

We choose our suppliers and their products according to quality, provenance and sustainability. Every ingredient needs to meet our strict environmental and quality guidelines; otherwise we simply won’t put it on your plate.

We use suppliers who share the same attitude towards the environment as we do – for example our laundry supplier recycles much of the water that they use to launder our chefs whites. Our butcher and greengrocer deliver on the same lorry in order to cut down on fuel emissions. Our used cooking oil gets collected and turned into biodiesel for environmentally-friendly cars. Waste cooking oils can reduce carbon emissions by up to 78% compared to a car running with regular diesel. Last year alone our restaurants’ recycled oil helped produce over 57,000 litres of biodiesel, which is enough to fill up a Ford Focus over 1,000 times!

We also recycle our glass, cardboard, paper and plastic wherever possible. We work hard with the local councils and shopping centre management where we have our restaurants, to become more efficient and continue to drive down the amount of waste which goes to landfill. Our new restaurants are fitted out with low voltage LED lights to cut down on the amount of energy we use. Our menus are all printed on recycled paper, simply because there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be.

Our staff are trained to do their bit, too. So lights are turned off in staff areas when they’re not needed; our dishwashers are only run when they’re full; our air conditioning and extractor fans are switched off when we don’t need them on, and we’re investing in modern, energy-efficient fridges.

We understand that running restaurants can never be completely carbon-neutral. We don’t just ignore that fact. So we are committed to protecting one acre of rainforest per year, per restaurant, in order to offset some of the carbon emissions that we’re responsible for. So this year alone we are protecting 19 acres of rainforest, which is over 827,000 square feet. That’s the equivalent size to over 390 tennis courts!

Our social responsibility is as important to us as our environmental responsibility. In April 2014 we supported one of our regulars, Natalie Richardson, in her bid to raise money for COSMIC (Children of St. Mary’s Intensive Care). Natalie ran the London Marathon, and we promised that any of our customers who donated to Natalie would receive the same amount of money from us, free of charge, in the form of Wildwood gift vouchers. Natalie raised over £5,000 for COSMIC this way, and we’re proud to have helped in our own small way.

We’ll keep doing more to improve, because it’s the right thing to do. We’re not perfect, we know that, and that’s why we’d love to hear from you with your suggestions and comments. Contact us via http://www.wildwoodrestaurants.co.uk/contact/ and let us know your thoughts.
